As the evenings draw in and the air takes on that crisp autumn chill, the British countryside comes alive with seasonal wildlife activity. From the haunting calls of tawny owls to the rustle of hedgehogs preparing for hibernation, autumn offers wildlife enthusiasts a rich variety of species to spot — and the right gear makes the experience even better.
Autumn is peak time for hearing and seeing owls, especially tawny and barn owls. They’re most active at dusk and during the night, gliding silently as they hunt small mammals.
Top Tip:Listen for the classic “twit-twoo” of tawny owls in woodlands, parks, and even large gardens.
Recommended Product:
Zeiss Secacam 7– Capture stunning, no-glow night images without disturbing these elusive birds.
Badgers remain active in autumn, often foraging for worms, fruit, and nuts before the colder months set in. Watch for signs of fresh digging at sett entrances.
Top Tip:Use thermal imaging to detect badgers in low light without causing any disturbance.
Recommended Product:
HikMicro Habrok 4K– Ideal for spotting badgers from a distance, even in total darkness.
🦔 Hedgehogs
These charming garden visitors are busy feeding up before hibernation. Sadly, their numbers are in decline, so spotting them is always special.
Top Tip:Look for them at dusk in gardens, parks, and hedgerows — and remember to leave out water (never milk) to help them along.
Recommended Product:
Pixfra Mile M207– A compact thermal monocular perfect for garden wildlife spotting.
🦌 Deer
With the rut season in full swing for red, sika, and fallow deer, autumn is the most dramatic time to watch them. Listen for roaring stags at dawn and dusk.
Top Tip:Keep your distance during the rut — deer can be aggressive. Use optics to enjoy the action safely.
Recommended Product:
Pulsar Merger XL50– Incredible image clarity for long-range deer observation.
Autumn offers some of the best wildlife watching opportunities of the year — and with the right equipment, you can never miss a moment in nature. Whether you’re capturing images with a trail camera or scanning fields with thermal optics, Wildlifecam has the perfect gear to make your autumn wildlife encounters unforgettable.
