Pulsar Wildlife Avilume XR50 - Further Information

The Pulsar Wildlife Avilume XR50 is an advanced pair of multispectral thermal binoculars for wildlife observation, combining highly sensitive 640 × 480 thermal imaging with a powerful 4K digital day and night vision channel. Designed for wildlife watchers, ecologists, conservation professionals and birdwatchers, the Avilume XR50 allows users to detect wildlife by heat before switching instantly to detailed digital imagery for identification and observation.

Whether you're carrying out an ecological wildlife survey, monitoring deer populations, searching for nocturnal mammals, birdwatching at dawn or dusk, or observing animals concealed by natural camouflage, the Pulsar Avilume XR50 provides a powerful all-in-one thermal and digital wildlife observation system capable of operating throughout daylight, twilight and darkness.

Combining a 640 × 480 12µm thermal sensor, exceptional <18mK sNETD thermal sensitivity, 2,300 metre detection range, integrated 1,500m laser rangefinder, electronic image stabilisation and 4K digital imaging, the Avilume XR50 offers the technology required for serious wildlife monitoring and professional ecological fieldwork.

Highly Sensitive 640 × 480 Thermal Imaging

Locating wildlife can often be considerably more difficult than identifying it. Natural camouflage, vegetation and poor light can allow animals to remain almost invisible through conventional optical binoculars.

The Pulsar Wildlife Avilume XR50 thermal binoculars use a sensitive 640 × 480, 12µm thermal imaging sensor to reveal the heat signatures produced by wildlife, allowing animals to be detected even when their colouring blends almost perfectly into the surrounding habitat.

With an impressive <18mK sNETD thermal sensitivity, the XR50 delivers excellent thermal contrast and detail, helping reveal subtle temperature differences during challenging conditions such as rain, fog and high humidity.

A thermal detection range of up to 2,300 metres also makes the Avilume XR50 suitable for everything from woodland and wetland surveys to scanning extensive areas of open countryside.

4K Digital Day & Night Vision

Once wildlife has been located using thermal imaging, switch instantly to the Avilume XR50's 4K digital imaging channel for closer visual identification.

During daylight the digital channel produces detailed full-colour imagery, continuing to retain useful colour information as available light falls through dusk and twilight.

After dark, the digital system transitions to high-contrast black-and-white night vision.

For wildlife observation in complete darkness, an integrated focusable infrared illuminator provides additional infrared illumination, allowing the Avilume XR50 to operate as an effective digital night vision binocular for nocturnal wildlife observation.

Thermal & Digital Picture-in-Picture

The Avilume XR50's Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality allows thermal and digital imagery to be viewed simultaneously.

One channel occupies the main display while the second appears within a smaller viewing window, providing additional information without losing awareness of the wider scene.

A quick press of the channel button swaps the two images, allowing observers to move seamlessly between thermal wildlife detection and digital identification.

Powerful 50mm Thermal Optics

A 50mm f/1.0 germanium objective lens works alongside the highly sensitive thermal detector to deliver excellent wildlife detection performance.

The XR50 provides an 8.8° thermal field of view, giving observers a generous view of the surrounding habitat when searching for heat signatures.

Once wildlife has been located, the digital channel's 5.8° field of view provides a more concentrated image for closer inspection and identification.

Up to 32× Thermal Magnification

For observing wildlife at longer distances, the Avilume XR50 provides an extensive magnification range across both imaging channels:

  • Thermal magnification: 4–32×
  • Digital magnification: 6.5–26×

The higher 4× base thermal magnification makes the XR50 particularly capable when observing wildlife across larger habitats and at longer distances, while magnification up to 32× allows detected heat signatures to be examined more closely.

Integrated 1,500m Laser Rangefinder

Knowing how far away an animal is can provide valuable additional information during wildlife surveys, ecological research and habitat monitoring.

The Avilume XR50 incorporates a powerful laser rangefinder capable of measuring distances up to 1,500 metres, with an accuracy of ±1 metre.

Distance measurements can be obtained quickly at the press of a button, providing useful context when recording wildlife observations or monitoring species across extensive habitats.

Electronic Image Stabilisation

Higher magnification is considerably more useful when the image remains steady.

The Avilume XR50 therefore features built-in Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS), digitally compensating for unwanted movement and image shake.

Whether you're tracking a moving animal, walking across uneven terrain or using higher magnification for detailed observation, EIS helps produce a smoother and more comfortable viewing experience.

Nine Thermal Colour Palettes

Adapt the thermal image to suit different species, environments and observation conditions using nine thermal colour palettes:

  • White Hot
  • Black Hot
  • Red Hot
  • Rainbow
  • Ultramarine
  • Sepia
  • Red Monochrome
  • Violet
  • Green

Different palettes can help highlight heat signatures, improve visual differentiation or provide a more comfortable image during extended periods of nocturnal wildlife observation.

Designed for Wildlife & Ecological Fieldwork

Despite the advanced technology inside, the Avilume XR50 maintains the familiar handling characteristics of conventional binoculars.

An ergonomic control system incorporates conveniently positioned focusing controls and a control wheel, allowing quick access to focusing, menus, digital functions and zoom.

The controls have also been designed to support one-handed operation, allowing adjustments to be made while maintaining concentration on the animal being observed.

Rugged Magnesium Alloy Construction

Wildlife observation rarely takes place in perfect conditions.

The Avilume XR50 therefore features a durable magnesium alloy body designed to protect its internal components against the knocks, bumps and scrapes associated with regular outdoor use.

An IP67 weatherproof rating provides protection against challenging environmental conditions including rain, fog, snow and high humidity.

With an operating temperature range of -25°C to +50°C, the XR50 is designed for year-round wildlife observation across an extensive variety of habitats and climates.

Tripod Mountable for Extended Wildlife Surveys

For prolonged observation, the supplied ¼-inch tripod mount allows the Avilume XR50 to be installed securely on a tripod.

This can be particularly valuable during ornithological surveys, ecological fieldwork, behavioural studies and long-duration habitat monitoring, where a stable hands-free observation platform is preferable.

Up to 10 Hours Battery Life

A removable and rechargeable APS5 battery provides up to 10 hours of operating time, depending upon temperature and usage conditions.

This extended battery performance makes the XR50 particularly well suited to professional fieldwork and longer wildlife observation sessions extending from daylight into darkness.

The removable battery system also makes it easier to carry additional charged batteries for extended surveys.

Built-In Photo, Video & Audio Recording

Capture important sightings directly through the Avilume XR50 using its integrated photo, video and audio recording capabilities.

With 64GB of internal memory, the binoculars provide substantial storage for photographs and hours of video footage.

For ecologists, conservationists and wildlife researchers, recorded material can be particularly useful for documenting sightings, reviewing animal behaviour and maintaining visual records during species and habitat surveys.

Wild Vision App & Wi-Fi Connectivity

Integrated 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi allows the Pulsar Wildlife Avilume XR50 to connect with compatible smartphones and tablets through the Pulsar Wild Vision app.
